Redemptive Organizations and the Politics of Hope

    Get PDF
The politics of hope of this article is rooted in the local leadership of low income, repressed communities. One central element of the politics of hope is redemptive organizations. These organizations are a variant of voluntary associations that are distinguished by their explicitly political purpose of social transformation and concomitant requirement of personal sacrifice and transformation. This article specifies the internal characteristics of redemptive organizations and their role in change over time. The history of four rural, southern, low-income, and predominantly black communities offer numerous instances of redemptive organizations that deal with educational, economic, and political conditions These organizations link change efforts from Reconstruction through the civil rights movement to the present. As such, they offer insight into constituent elements of social movement

The epistemology of participatory research relates knowledge to action, especially the production of knowledge and political action to redress inequality .This paper identifies characteristics of participatory research and describes three research efforts which exemplify them in varying degrees. The tenets of participatory research suggest guidelines for degrees, the conduct of inquiry for social scientists interested in the relation of research to increased political participation and improved human services

Parameters of oxidative stress in saliva from patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis

Objectives: Free radicals play an important role in the onset and progression of many diseases. The aim ofthis study was to investigate the contribution of oxidative stress in the pathology of aggressive (AgP) andchronic (CP) periodontitis and its relation with the clinical periodontal status. Methods: Eighty subjects were divided into two groups: 20 patients with AgP and 20 patients with CP withtheir 20 corresponding matched controls, based on clinical attachment loss (CAL), probing pocket depth(PPD), and bleeding on probing (BOP). Saliva reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation, and nonenzymaticantioxidant defences were measured by luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay, asthiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARs) and total radical-trapping antioxidant potential (TRAP),respectively. Pearson?s correlation and multivariate analysis were used to determine the relationshipbetween ROS and TBARs and the clinical parameters. Results: ROS and TBARs were increased in AgP while TRAP was decreased, comparing with CP. In AgP, astrong and positive correlation was observed between ROS and TBARs and they were closely associatedwith CAL and PPD.Discussion: In AgP, but not in CP, oxidative stress is a high contributor to periodontal pathology and it isclosely associated with the clinical periodontal status.Fil: Acquier, Andrea Beatriz. We are all School

    Get PDF
The project “We are all school” aimed to break down barriers between the school and the community, to convey the idea that we all have something to add to the school, as we are all educational agents. Our intention was to give more visibility to the activities that the school develops with the community in general. As this community is made up of people from different parts of the world, with diverse cultures and knowledge, we set out to look for  their experiences and knowledge so that the school could benefit from the richness of this diversity. We also set out to involve the whole community more actively, valuing all the knowledge that could be carried to benefit the full learning path of students, regardless of their origin or social position

Eisosomes are dynamic plasma membrane domains showing Pil1-Lsp1 heteroligomer binding equilibrium

Eisosomes are plasma membrane domains concentrating lipids, transporters, and signaling molecules. In the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, these domains are structured by scaffolds composed mainly by two cytoplasmic proteins Pil1 and Lsp1. Eisosomes are immobile domains, have relatively uniform size, and encompass thousands of units of the core proteins Pil1 and Lsp1. In this work we used fluorescence fluctuation analytical methods to determine the dynamics of eisosome core proteins at different subcellular locations. Using a combination of scanning techniques with autocorrelation analysis, we show that Pil1 and Lsp1 cytoplasmic pools freely diffuse whereas an eisosome-associated fraction of these proteins exhibits slow dynamics that fit with a binding-unbinding equilibrium. Number and brightness analysis shows that the eisosome-associated fraction is oligomeric, while cytoplasmic pools have lower aggregation states. Fluorescence lifetime imaging results indicate that Pil1 and Lsp1 directly interact in the cytoplasm and within the eisosomes. These results support a model where Pil1-Lsp1 heterodimers are the minimal eisosomes building blocks. Moreover, individual-eisosome fluorescence fluctuation analysis shows that eisosomes in the same cell are not equal domains: while roughly half of them are mostly static, the other half is actively exchanging core protein subunits.Fil: Olivera Couto, Agustina. The Symmetry Concept in the Perspective of Basic Education Teachers

    Get PDF
The curricular changes that have occurred with the Portuguese Mathematics programme of study of 2007 showed, among other situations, the introduction of new contents and the new concept of symmetry. For the teachers, these changes require scientific updates to be provided so that the outcomes of the mathematics teaching can be guaranteed. In the academic year 2011/2012 a questionnaire was applied to a 142 inservice basic education teachers of a particular region of Portugal, to analyze the content knowledge in this subject (symmetry) and the form of scientific update occurred. The processing of data allowed us to identify inadequate conceptions, beliefs, topics more or less successful in responses and also compare the teacher’s responses of the different teaching groups.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
